If you are visiting Zermatt for any length of time, the chances are that you will want to visit the Sunnegga Paradise. The word Sunnegga literally translates as ‘Sunny Corner’ and this lovely Rothorn Mountain area is popular for both skiing and hiking, depending on which season you are visiting. It is easily accessible from Zermatt and is also home to the Wolli Ski Park making it a popular choice for families and fun seekers.

You can reach Sunnegga via the funicular railway which runs from the Valley Station, Vispastrasse 32, Zermatt. This is a ten minute walk from the main Bahnhof in the centre of Zermatt. Here you can catch one of the fantastic new blue trains which have been in operation since 2013. The carriages have plenty of room for all your gear, including ski equipment or bikes, and will whisk you up to Sunnegga in just 3 minutes. Once you reach Sunnegga you can access other areas such as the Gornergrat ski area and the Rothorn area.

Where to eat

Wolli Ski Park

Wolli Ski Park

Wolli Ski Park is the perfect place for beginners of all ages with a choice of nursery slopes, magic carpets and gentle runs to choose from. There are also a number of ski schools operating in this area, so you will have plenty of options in you are looking for some instruction. There is also a vertical shuttle called, the Leisee Shuttle which operates between the Sunnegga funicular station and the Wolli Park, making access easy for everyone.

In the summer months Wolli’s becomes Wolli’s Adventure Park which is a gorgeous playground right next to the Leisee Lake. If it is warm enough you can play with the water features in the lake itself, or explore the play area on the shores of the lake. There are plenty of places for adults to chill out and enjoy the view, whilst supervising the kids!

Hiking or cycling in Sunnegga

If you enjoy walking and you are visiting in summer then you must take the time to hike or even cycle around the lakes up at Sunnegga. There are a number of trails, so you can make your day as hard or as easy as you like. Why not take a picnic, or some time out in one of the restaurants in the area.

If you are after a reflection of the famous Toblerone Matterhorn in one of the lakes we recommend Stellisee, Grindsee or Leisee!

If you are seeking some adventure why not hire a Sunnegga Kickbike, which is a scooter and bike hybrid and is great fun! Their tour includes a track which takes you all the way down to the village and is suitable for children from aged 9 and above.

Sunnegga Cycling

Findeln

Findeln is a small hamlet where Zermatt farming families used to live over the summer whilst they looked after their farm animals and pastures. Findeln is famous for its mountain cuisine, and old buildings and barns which make it a popular place to visit year round! There is also a famous little chapel called Jakobus der Ältere dedicated to St James, the patron saint of pilgrims.
